Use your feet for Snow
A 'sit and wait for snow' attitude just isn't the answer for Ruapehu, according to Mike Wiggins, Manager of the New Zealand Snow Dancing Team. The team is due to perform tomorrow night outside Hot Lava night club in Ohakune and Mr Wiggins said there is no doubt in his mind that there will be snow on Thursday morning. The ceremony will begin at the nightclub at 7.30pm with what Mr Wiggins calls 'praise sessions and imbibing' and will continue in the streets of Ohakune with the traditional snow dance chant. At 10.30pm a sacrificial burning of skis will take place opposite the Junction Ski Shop's weather rock. Mr Wiggins said that he is sure the rock will be white by morning, indicating snow.
Members of the International Snow Dancing Team have been contacted and they include E.T and his cousin D.T, a variety of local vegetables, Australian Billy Bong, SKI FM personalities Sleezaa Gribbens and Mahatma Coate, Maharishi Guru, and Big Chief Hiwaka. The Mayor of the Junction will also be present. Mr Wiggins said that the team was so successful in 1983 that it snowed not only in Ohakune , but also in Rotorua. Mr Wiggins stressed that this is a very solemn event md said that the future of Ohakune rests on this one night.
Supporters of the event include Turoa and Whakapapa Ski Fields and Ski FM. Other snow dance teams include Piping Hot Pipers, Turoa Lodge Lungers, Dave Campbell and the Incredible Dancing Gnomes, The Pommy Snow Punchers (Ski Rack), Chairlift Cheerleaders, The T-Bar Boys, The Sports Country Snow Shufflers, Handy Andy and the Chapettes (Turoa), the Lava Lava's (Hot Lava), New World Blue Beat Butchers, Rockapapa (Whakapapa 1), the Whakapapa Mamas and Papas (Whakapapa 2), the Le Barn Bangettes, and Billy Bong and the Digeredoos (Video Bill and Co.)
