Seafarer finds land legs
New Zealand's most inland naval base Irirangi, is in the hands of a new commander who has had many years experience at the helm. Lieutenant Commander Owen Young took over the position. from previous Commander Richard Jackson who left the area in July to take up an administration position in Wellington. Lt. Cmdr Young and his family moved from Auck-
land late last month, where he was executive officer aboard the 'HMNZS Wellington.' He was aboard the ship for two years and was commanding officer for 12 months. Lt. Cmdr. Young has 18 years naval experience behind him. He joined the Navy as an officer under a University training scheme and trained in both Australian and British naval colleges. Lt. Cmdr. Young spent 10 years at sea on various ships and specialised in warfare and communications. He has sailed on all four of New Zealand's naval Frigates, the most recent being the newest vessel HMNZS Wellington.
Irirangi is his first shore command. He has also commanded various patrol craft around the waters of New Zealand. He and his wife Judy and their children Kelly 8 and Ryan 6, have settled into the community well, said Cmdr. Young. He said he intends to maintain Irirangi's links with the Borough of Ohakune and the people of the Waimarino. He is a 'retired' rugby player and a keen cricket player, and intends to take full advantage of the facilities in the area. Mrs Young helped as a parent aide while in Auckland and will be continuing in the same capacity at Waiouru Primary School.
