'Manu Ti Oriori' perform at Waiouru
After just three months of working together as a team, a group of trainees from Maungarongo Marae's music and drama module 'hit-the-road' on a tour of schools around the Waimarino. The four trainees were taking part in a 20-week TAPS module, run through the Marae's Kokiri and were encouraged to learn to play musical instruments by tutor Vera Wilson. They formed a group called Manu Ti-Oriori, which means 'songsters' and last week held concerts at local schools to gain experience.
For a group who had very little previous experience with musical instruments they have improved markedly, according to Mrs Wilson. The group's drummer Willy Taylor and Valanique Wilson bass guitar player, had never played those instruments before, while recorder player Felecia Wilson had not played the instrument in eight
years. Lead rhythm guitarist and vocalist Paddy Tahu is the fourth member of the band. Anthea Allerby and Vera Wilson are back-up vocalists for the group. The band use an extensive electronics system supplied by Charles Mareikura for added quality of sound, while the player's instruments are their own.
