Catchment Rates Concern

Ohakune Borough Councillors discussed the Wanganui-Rangi-tikei Catchment Board rates at last week's full council meeting in light of the fact that the burden of collecting catchment rates will stay with the borough. Councillors expressed dissatisfaction at the Board's method of apportioning catchment rates, with Ohakune Borough ratepayers at present charged $43 per hectare, while rural rates were 59 cents per hectare. "We are hit hard solely because of the high capital value of the land in the

Borough" said Mayor Bill T aylor. Councillor Bruce Thompson suggested council put a remit to next year's municipal conference on the subject of apportioning catchment rates. "At present it is within the control of the catchment board to decide the means of apportioning catchment rates" said Mayor Taylor. He said with government removing catchment grants the Board will be hitting councils even harder in the future.
