Wine Club taste victory

Wine tasting is a serious business and the Waimarino Wine Club were out to beat the Taupo competition at last weekend's gathering of wine enthusiasts from around the North Island. Waimarino Wine Club hosted the six teams who came from Auckland, Tokoroa, Wanganui and Taupo. Up for grabs were the 'Wine Slide' and The Slab', a coveted trophy fought for between Taupo and Waimarino since 1981. The clubs meet annually for the competition, this year at the Lion's Den in Ohakune, to compete in teams of four for the two trophies. The teams answered ques-

tions put to them by Auckland Cellar Master Peter King, relating to samples of red and white wines from around the world. At half time, the Waimarino 'Rambookas' were in second place behind Auckland after a hotly contested third round. They emerged victorious and took The Slab' away from Taupo as well as being placed second overall. The final standings were: Wanganui 50, Taupo 1 49, Taupo A 71, Tokoroa 70, Taupo 2 73, Auckland 105, Waimarino 84. Team member Judy Doyle said the competition is a highlight of the year and is always "great fun". "It was a good effort by our team, especially considering Taupo has 80 members in their club, while Waimarino has just seven," she said.
