Horse history recalled
Last Saturday, 11 July was the 76th anniversary of an historic train journey between Auckland and Wellington. In July 1911, William Montgomery was taking his horse "Hoanga" to the Wellington steeplechase by train. Hoanga was the first horse to be transported all the way between Auckland and Wellington by rail. At National Park, William Montgomery chose to get into the horse crate to put extra rags on Hoanga because it was snowing. He found that because of his size he couldn't get back out of the crate, having squeezed his way in. He was unable to draw anyone's attention at National Park, or Ohakune, or anywhere else until Taihape, where it was still snowing. As far as is known there were no ill effects from the cold trip especially for the horse, which won the 1911 Wellington steeplechase. The Wellington steeplechase held on Saturday was the 100th.
