Raetihi renumbering problem persists
Raetihi residents are not getting in behind the Borough or Raetihi Primary School in their latest venture to sell street numbers, according to the Raetihi Borough Council. The response from residents was termed "atrocious" by Raetihi's Mayor Garrick Workman. The school took on the job of selling numbers at $1.50 each last month but has reported limited success. Councillor Leigh Ryland stated that there was a lot of opposition to the renumbering scheme. "People are being downright stubborn for the sake
of being stubborn," she said. Councillor Tom Punch said a good attempt was made when the town was initially numbered but long-term development had left gaps. A problem that residents now face is doubling up of numbers in the same street. "The sooner the properties are marked correctly, the better," said Mayor Workman. He went on to say that the Borough would guarantee the success of the project if need be, by purchasing the entire stock of numbers and levying ratepayers.
