Three die in tragic accident near Waiouru

Three Taihape teenagers are dead after a tragic motor accident that occurred nine kilometres east of Ohakune on Saturday morning. The youths were Bert Manuhopokia Eruera 17, Stephen James McLean 18 and Jerrimiah Tuhi Chase 19. The three left a party in Raetihi at about 3.15am and were on their way home to Taihape when their vehicle left State Highway 49 on a straight piece of road, smashed through a fence and drove into a pond on the Karioi property of farmer Noel Bates. The accident is believed to have occurred just before 4am but the car was not found until 7.30am. The motorist who found the vehicle a local farmer, flagged down a bus carrying workers from nearby Karioi Mill who attempted to help the trapped victims. Attempts by the Ohakune Volunteer Fire Brigade to revive Bert Eruera who still

had a pulse when they arrived failed. An inquest into the deaths of the three men will be held.
