Winstone's Karioi cracks half million
Winstone Pulp Industries celebrated a milestone recently w&h the production of 500,000 tonnes of export pulp since they started production in 1978. May 5 marked the milestone in the Mill's history with half a million Air Dryed M^rfc Tonnes (ADMT) of export pulp produced. Mill Manager Kit Wilson said he was very happy to see such an achievement for the mill after the problems of the early days. A small function which was divided into two shifts to accommodate all workers was held and staff werc presented with suitably inscribed beer glasses to commemorate the occasion. Mr Wilson is enthusiastic with - the current production team at the mill and said the team effort that prevails was instrumental in achieving the goal. In the first year the mill produced about 20,000 tonnes which stabilised at about 40,000 tonnes for the following three years then dropped to 30,000 in 1982 as a result of the bad market situation overseas. Since ironing out the initial difficulties, the mill has gone from strength to strength, until 1987 when the industry has its sights set on producing 125,000 tonnes per year. This quota is expected to become a reality within the next 1824 months. Mr Wilson said the mill will be looking at reaching their next goal of one million tonnes in half the time it has taken to reach 500,000. Contd. from page 1 The phoneline counselling service operates from the R.E.A.P office in Clyde Street, Ohakune which has the office facilities for both organisations. The bureau is currently applying to the Community Organisations Grants Scheme for a grant to cover the initial expenses of training volunteers and to pay for the telephone. The next public meeting for the Waimarino Community Advice Service is on 16 June at the R.E.A.P office in Ohakune and it is hoped more volunteers will come forward. The establishment committee are meeting on 9 June to elect officers.
