LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Where's Mangawhero Tce? It's taken a while but at last I know. If you float down the Mangawhero stream you will see all of it. Starting from Ohakune Junction you jump in and bounce your way through the rocks until you get to the swing bridge near the end of Goldfinch Street. Here the stream, and the terrace, swings to the right. This part of the street is called Mangawhero Terrace Extension. From here Mangawhero Terrace goes through a time and space warp and possibly exists in the mind of some long forgotten town planner in another universe running roughly parallel to Goldfinch street maybe, it's not a road-way you can drive on
at present. But you can carry on floating down Mangawhero Stream, far away from any bitumen, real or imaginary. A little way down-stream you may get a glimpse of that 'Mangawhero Terrace' of mythology as it looms out of the fog of diesel fumes from State Highway 49A. That would be your last chance to see the mangled Mangawhero Terrace before you float off into the sunset. Sounds like a load of rubbish? Yeah, I reckon, still so is the real Mangawhero Terrace which is split into three sections spread about the town of Ohakune. If you try to direct someone to Mangawhero Terrace they, and you, are liable to get very
confused. Do you send them up Goldfinch Street which becomes Mangawhero for no apparent reason? Do you tell them to turn right into Mangawhero Terrace from Mangawhero Terrace? Or do you send them out of town (if they head north theyll see two or three houses on the right that belong to Mangawhero Terrace). I think we should do something about this absurd situation because it is confusing for visitors and residents alike. How about changing the names of all the streets to Mangawhero Terrace?
