A 'Standby' group to help those in need has recently been formed in the Waimarino and the group now require volunteers to undertake parttime work in the community. 'Standby' is a non-profit organisation that aims to provide help to people who

require emergency or short term assistance in the home. The people who may benefit from the service include the elderly, accident compensation or sickness beneficiaries, mothers with young children and solo parents. The group was formed through the Waimarino Community Health Watch

Committee. 'Standby' originally formed in Wanganui in 1979 and initially the service was provided only for young families. The founder of the group was a mother with young children who found herself in the situation of needing home-help. The Waimarino 'Standby' group need people who are willing to work part-time. Helpers are paid for their hours of community work which may include housework and baby sitting. Helpers are required to have a current driver's licence and must be on the phone. Teenagers are encouraged to act as helpers but must have their parent's consent before they take on any work. Helpers are interviewed initially in their own home by two members of the 'Standby' committee and two references from family or friends are needed before an applicant is accepted. lnformation about becoming a helper for 'Standby' can be obtained from Jenny Dekker, phone 54-057. If you need the services of 'Standby' you should phone 54-095. All calls will be kept confidential.
