New Waiouru Restaurateurs
Two restaurants on the Main Road in Waiouru have undergone name changes and face-lifts after recent changes of management. The Al-Deserto, now 'Kia-Ora' Restaurant, was recently taken over by Roy and Cerise McMaster, formerly of Flock House near Bulls. Roy left his positiori as engineer instructor and Cerise her job as servery assistant, for the 'sunshine' of Waiouru, as they called it. The pair have been involved in the catering business for about lOyearsand saw the potential of the Waiouru business. They took over from the previous proprietors, Peter and Angela Baran, earlier this year and in just a short time have made changes to the dinner menu and light meal range. Their long-term plans include expanding into
accommodation. The business already boasts a takeaway, restaurant, dairy and amusements. The McMasters report very good patronage since their takeover and say they have found the local people to be "exceptionally friendly."
SILVER FERN Alf and Doreen Walker, formerly of Rotorua are the new managers of the 'Silver Fern' Restaurant, formerly Al-Vento's. The couple opened their doors for business on 28 December. The Walkers have had
many years in the catering business both in Australia and in New Zealand. They had to start "from scratch" with the business' which was previously managed by Mr and Mrs Miocevich. The dining room has recently been re-carpeted, with added touches of lace curtains and pot-plants towards.a more "homely" atmosphere. There are still alterations being made to the building, including the installation of a Kent fire for use during the winter months. A plus for the business is the fact that they still wrap their fish and chips in the traditional newspaper, which apparently appeals to patrons. The Walkers said they were impressed by the reception they received from the community and accordingly they are attempting to cater for the community's tastes.
