Sponsorship for Tongariro Soccer
The Tongariro Soccer Association has received a financial 'shot-in-the-arm' with a major sponsorship deal being announced last week. National retailers. Furniture House, are involved in sports sponsorship throughout the country. Taumarunui^ branch has followed suit with a package deal to the Soccer Association whic'.t is worth $ 1 ,000 a year for the next three years. Says Taumarunui^ Furniture House branch manager. Mr Colin Hodgson, "We've been on the lookout to sponsor some sports groups for some time."
lt is proposed to use some of the money as a subsidy for seniors' fees and it will also help with the cost of replacing existing well worn equipment, as well as funding more frequent coaching for players. One of the main problems the Tongariro region has, is the wide area it covers. During the 1987 season it is hoped players from as far afield as Turangi and Waiouru will come together
and join with other teams in the region and take part in soccer coaching sessions. in addition to competing in league games. Although Mr Hodgson has played soccer, he says that this season he will be involved on the sidelines as a 'social supporter'. He feels the Soccer Association isa good and worthy sporting body and he is pleased to be able to put something back into the community.
Mr Stan Trotter frrom the Tongariro Soccer Akssociation was in the 'right iplace at the right time', wlhen he approached Furniture House about possiblle sponsorship. Mr Trotter describes the financial support as "a longterm investment in junior soccer players in the region." Much of the funds will be used for junior players where development is needed.
