County plans Rangataua changes
Objections to the Waimarino County Council plans for sewage reticulation for Rangataua close on 23 April. The council has been granted a water right for the scheme by the Rangatikei Wanganui Catchment Board which allows for a discharge of up to 50 cubic metres a day of oxidation pond treated sewage into the Mangaehuehu Stream near Rangataua. The treatment scheme is designed to handle a population of 300 which is well above the present maximum population. The scheme involves a full reticulation system with the household sewage treated in two oxidation ponds to be located south-west of the town, near the Rangataua Reserve. The board has attached special conditions to the water right. The effluent discharges are to be monitored and analysed every three months. The levels of solids and coliform bacteria allowed in the effluent dis-
charge will have set limits. At present, residents of Rangataua use either septic tanks or holding tanks which must be emptied approximately once every six months. Proceeding concurrently with the implementation of the sewtrage system is a proposal by the county to charge the District Scheme zoning in respect of Rangataua. The changes proposed involve re-zoning land at Rangataua from rural D to residential. The objective of the proposed residential zone is cited as being 'to create a pleasant environment for residential development which satisfies the needs and fulfils the expectations of those people already living permanently in the township and holiday makers alike' and 'to retain the existing rural character of the township'. Objections and submissions dealing with the proposed changes to the district scheme close on Friday 1 May.
