Whakapapa ski lodge gutted

Ngauruhoe Lodge on Whakapapa Skifield was gutted by fire on Sunday morning 22 March. The ski lodge was unoccupied when the fire started sometime before 5.30am. The fire started in the lounge. The lodge is about 150 metres from the 'Top of the Bruce', south-west of the loop road. Problems with access to the lodge meant that most fire appliances could not ■ reach the building, but luck- ■ tijjfN a four-wheel drive vehicle ■V *(th water tanks was able to drive up an access road to the lodge.

Water from the vehicle was used as well as water from the reserve tank of a nearby lodge. Russell Montgomery, a Tongariro National Park ranger and volunteer fireman said it was lucky there was an access road near the lodge. "This fire shows the vulnerability of the lodges and the problems with getting water" he said. "If you built up there you took the risk." Fire appliances from National Park, Owhango, Taupo and Whakapapa attended the fire, which was brought under control by about 8am.
