High hoist for Irirangi

Machinery enthusiasts who visited the Desert Fair in Waiouru recently would have been interested in the new Mercedes truck from

HMNZS Irirangi that was on display. The six wheel drive truck has a 'Palfinger' hoist fitted that can be extended to a height of 1 00 feet. The outfit

which cost $300,000 is used for construction and maintenance of HMNZS Irirangi's radio masts and aerials. Driver Bruce Cunningham and operator Tom McNamara, have been working with the machine on the new transmitter building at Irirangi. One of the features of the machine is the remote control console that can be used in the bucket to operate the cherry picker. This allows Tom McNamara to place the bucket more precisely than if he were operating from the ground. The hoist is capable of lifting 10 tonnes if the load is close to the truck, and 200kg at full lateral extension.* The machine replaces an old Bedford truck which was equipped with a Hamilton hoist.
