More kits needed
The Raetihi-Ohakune Rotary Club needs the assistance of Waimarino residents to make up the emergency boxes destined for disaster victims, at home and overseas. The emergency boxes contain an assortment of essential items: — plates, cutlery, cups, shovel, tools, toiletries and clothing, to name just some of the basics. The kits are principally for families in the aftermath of the devastating hurricanes and consequent flooding that frequently hit islands in the Pacific Ocean, but are sometimes put to use closer to home, such as after the recent earthquake in the Bay of Plenty. The Rotary Club has received a letter from the convenor of the scheme in Wellington telling them that another shipment of boxes was despatched to Fiji recently for families affected by Hurricane Rajah which devastated parts of Vanua Levu and the northern islands of the Fiji group. So far 67 boxes have been sent overseas and the stockpile is down to four.
Collecting the necessary items is an on-going concern and Rotary Clubs nationwide are currently working on replenishing their depleted supply of boxes that they stockpile in Wellington until they are needed. A list of items along with
an emergency box are on display at the Ohakune Photo Pharmacy. Contributions by members of the public may be made there or items may be handed over to a member of Rotary.
