Hut fees collected
Finding volunteers to act as hut wardens in the Tongariro National Park this summer was no easy task, according to Park Ranger Russell Montgomery. The user-pays policy is to the users'advantage because fees collected from Mangatepopo and Ketetahi huts go towards their upkeep, he said. Mr Montgomery said he doubts whether any overdue fees from people owing for hut stays will be forthcoming. "A lot of people see it as an opportunity for a free stay," he said. Mr Montgomery surmised that the accumulated
fees of both huts could easily amount to over $1000 a week if the huts were manned full time during the summer. As it was, only one hut warden was appointed, who collected $1000 from the Ketetahi Hut while the unmanned Mangatepopo Hut, also heavily used by visitors, returned around $100. "We were unable to provide the man-power from our existing staff this year, nevertheless we need accurate figures to justify increased expenditure," he said. From a study of the Ketetahi Hut it was estimated that only 40% of people using the facilities pay for the privilege.
