Innovative water treatment

Ultra-violet disinfection of Ohakune's water supply is the councH's choice after months of careful consideration by the Borough Council and their consultant engineer, Payne Sewell. Hanova, a worldwide disinfection company, has advised the Council that ultra-violet disinfection, a process of exposing infected water to artificial ultraviolet light is the easiest and most effective way to disinfect and is extremely cost competitive when compared with the process of chlorination. The company's ultraviolet disinfection system would cost between $200,000$250,000 compared to $272,000 for the chlorina-

tion disinfection system proposed by MacEwans Machinery Ltd. last June. The state of Ohakune's water supply is of growing concern to councillors and residents, who are reminded that it is still necessary to boil drinking water, after the latest tests conducted by the Wanganui Area Health Board showed bacterial contamination levels well above health standards. The council has approached Payne Sewell Ltd. to submit a proposal for the ultra-violet method of disinfection to the Wanganui Area Health Board and the Ministry of Works and Development, for their comments on whether it meets their requirements and whether a subsidy could be granted for the scheme.
