Waimarino Sportsperson

Skier Patrick Cooper has been chosen as the Waimarino sportsperson of the year for 1986 from a group of six nominees. The award was announced at a dinner held at the Ohakune Primary School hall on Saturday night as part of the Ohakune Jubilee Celebrations. The dinner and the award were arranged by the Ruapehu Lions Club and the Ohakune-Karioi Rugby Club and attended by Ohakune mayor Bill Taylor, Raetihi mayor Garrick Workman, Con Heinold — chairman of the Waimarino County Council, guest speaker Brian Lochore and about 250 Waimarino residents and friends. Patrick Cooper was chosen as sportsperson of the year for his achievements as a disabled skier during 1986. These achievements include his gold medal success at the US

National Championships for the disabled, a 6th overall placing in the World Championships for disabled skiers in Sweden, and the success gained in competition with able bodied skiers in the National Speed Skiing Competitions at Turoa. where Patrick skied at 1 3 1 ,58kph to gain 25th placing in a field of 44. Mayor Bill Taylor, who was one of the three judges for the Waimarino Sportsperson, described Patrick as "a young man of rare determination and growing distinction." The other judges for the sportsperson were Pam Lochore and Major Rob Story, of Waiouru^ Other nominees for the award were: Siegfried Bauer. ultra distance runner; Glyn Hubbard, gymnastics coach. developer and administrator; Ohakune-Karioi Rugby Team; Charles Mariekura.
