Travelling recipe
Travelling slow enough to see and hear whats around them is the travelling recipe for American couple, Joe and Alice Lavender. Last week they biked into Ohakune where they planned to spend a couple of days before continuing south toward their goal — The Milford Track.
They arrived in New Zealand with their push bikes from Australia, just over two weeks ago. On two wheels the couple have ridden as far north as the Bay of Islands. On the southern leg of their journey they have come down through Te Kuiti, Taumarunui and National Park.
Alice includes in her baggage a pair of binoculars and a book on birds and the couple frequently stop to investigate different bird species. They enjoy the freedom their means of travel allows and the 54 year olds say push bike touring is for anyone. Biking an average of five hours a day, the couple stress the importance of wearing safety helmets. "They're the first thing we reach for before setting off", says Joe. Both Joe and Alice agree that New Zealand people are very friendly and accommodating towards tourists.
