Desert Road danger
A doctor at Waiouru Camp Hospital issued a warning recently to motorists using the Desert Road — SH1 north of Waiouru. Capt. Nigel J. Murray RNZAMC, one of the hospital's four resident doctors, warned motorists to adjust their driving for the conditions of the road. "People must adjust their driving skills to compensate for the treacherous conditions," he said. The Desert Road is at its worst during the winter months and is often covered with a layer of ice or snow for days on end. "Waiouru is merely a transit place between Auckland and Wellington for some people. They come directly from city driving and don't allow for changes
in road conditions or traffic conditions," he said. During 1986 the hospital treated around 20,000 patients — a number of which were road accident victims. Captain Murray said the hospital's emergency team of paramedical staff, nurses and doctors is becoming involved more and more frequently with Waimarino Hospital's emergency services
