Ohakune jubilee celebrations

Work on the Ohakune 75th Jubilee celebrations is now in full swing, with most activities confirmed. The plans for the Governor-General's visit are set, with Sir Paul Reeves arriving on Sunday 15 February at 2pm to be welcomed onto Maungarongo Marae. At around 3. 1 5 there will be an interdenominational church service on the Marae. The Governor General will take part in the service. In the evening there will be an informal dinner with His Excellency and Lady Reeves for Ohakune's senior citizens, mayor and councilors. Over one hundred invitations have been sent out for this event and the numbers accepting are very high. Those senior citizens who have not received an invitation are welcome and should contact Deena Porter at the council offices. Sir Paul will speak at the dinner, and Mayor Bill Taylor will make a presentation. On Monday 15 the pupils of Ruapehu College, Ohakune Primary School, and Ohakune Kindergarten will assemble at Ohakune Primary School to meet Sir Paul. The Governor General and

Lady Reeves will leave Ohakune at around 10.00am. The involvement of the New Zealand Navy in the celebrations is confirmed, starting with HMNZS Irirangi and the Royal New Zealand Navy Band holding a Charter Parade on Friday 20 February, starting at Ilam. The parade is to reconfer the Freedom Of The Borough on HMNZS Irirangi. The ceremony will take place outside council chambers with Rear Admiral Tempero present. The navy band will also play a concert at Ruapehu College, march in the float parade on Saturday 21, and play at the Debutante Ball. Mayor Bill Taylor said in his opinion HMNZS Irirangi is contributing massively to the celebrations and he would like to thank them for their efforts. He also said that all members of the public are invited to the events. The Debutante Ball plans are well under way. Tickets are now on sale at the Ruapehu Region Information Centre. With enough public support this event will be a great night out, which will not be repeated for a very long time.
