"Ruapehu Region" recommended
The inclusion of Mt Ruapehu and the Waimarino in a Wanganui area tourism region has been suggested by a Wellington marketing consultants firm. The firm 'Adworks' has recommended in a report on tourism to the Wanganui United Council that the area based on Wanganui be called the Ruapehu Region, and be promoted as 'the North lsland's adventure playground'. This would create a new, exciting, readily acceptable image for the potential visitor, related to but expanding on Ruapehu's skiing associations, and giving New Zealand a precise image of the region, according to the report. The report also points out as a weakness in attracting visitors the "lack of good liaison between all areas of the region, particularly with regard to Ohakune, which would prefer to be associated with the volcanic plateau."
This point is bourne out by the comments of Ohakune's Mayor Bill Taylor reported in the Wanganui Chroncile last Firday. He said the town's future lies in looking towards other areas away from Wanganui. "Scant regard is paid to the fact that the country's oldest park, the Tongariro National Park, lies largely within our regional bounds. This small part of the Wanganui region is already a long way along the path of Teaching our major tourist potential," he said. Catherine Dodd, of the Ruapehu Region Information Office, said there was a move to include the Waimarino in a tourist promotion region with other parts of the volcanic plateau, but promotion area boundaries are not fixed. "The Waimarino could have the best of both worlds, with links to the north as well as with Wanganui," she said.
