Celebrates 101 birthday in bed

Pictured above is Ruby Parker, now the oldest resident of the Waimarino. She celebrated her 101th birthday last Thursday at the Wanganui Hospital. She's not sick though, it's just a fractured leg.

Originally from a farming family in Victoria. Australia, she married Irishman Paddy Parker and came to New Zealand in 1910. The couple had eight children and Mrs Parker now has numerous great and even great-great grandchild-

ren. Sadly the 64 year long marriage ended in 1974, with the death of her husband. The beautiful plate in the photo is one she salvaged from the savage fire which swept through Raetihi in 1917. ■
