Ohakune karate gradings held
Grading examinations for the Ohakune School of Karate were held recently with the students performing various techniques and combinatin movements. The school has been in existence since 1973 and has a limited number of students. none under the age of 1 6, as the style is considered too hard and technical. Five students were graded on a syllabus laid down by the Master of the Kyokushinkui Style. Any student graded according to the system is on a par with students of the same style all over the world.
The grading took three hours and consisted of a 15minute warm up, 20 minutes practising basic form and techniques of kicking. 30 minutes basics of combination moves, 20 minutes performing preset combinations, and 45 minutes on the various types of fighting, finishing off with Ju-kumite (free style fighting). After total physical and mental exhaustion was
reached each student was required to perform Tamashawni - breaking 1 inch by 12 inch square boards. The students performed various combinations, the complexity of each being measured by their grade. Bruce Edwards - Third kyu (second green belt), broke two boards with knife hand, one punch and one side kick. Les Crowe - Third kyu
(second green), performed two punches, two elbow, and one flying front kick. Carolyn Crawford - Fifth kyu (second yellow), performed one knife hand and one front kick. ^teve Emmitt -(beginner) sixth kyu, performed one punch, and one front kick. Mirian Dominick-(begin-ner) ninth kyu, performed one hammer fist.
