Tourism Day promises central region promotion

Tourism Day 1986 looks set to be a great success. Registrations are flowing in steadily from around the central North Island and co-ordinator Christine La Varis is delighted with the very positive response. "People are aware that this is a trendsetting eve'nt for the region and they want to be part of the action," she said. "For a tourist region to work it must represent all sectors of the industry, and so far the Tourism Day registrations reflect this." Registration fees received to date represent skifield management, fishing guides, banking, hotels. motels, public relations consultants, local tourist attractions, information centres, camp-

ing ground management, planning consultants, promotion officers and local mayors and councillors. Organisers hope that others in the visitor servicing trade such as restaurateurs and retailers will also attend, along with people involved in Maori tourism, homestays and farm-based tourism. Tourism Day 1986 will be held at Tokaanu Hotel on Thursday, 13 November, from 9am to 5pm. Lunch and morning and afternoon tea are included in the $30 registration fee. Registration forms are being distributed through the central North Island regions five local promotion associations based in Taumarunui, Taupo, Turangi. Ohakune and Taihape.

Mr Stuart Long, a member of the national executive of the New Zealand Tourist Industry Federation, will give the openingaddress"The Advantages of Regional Tourism." Five different workshops will tackle the following topics: regional tourism policy, administering and funding a tourist region, regional tourism research needs, regional visitor information needs and promoting and marketing a tourist region. "In comparison with other tourist regions we are one of the last to get up and running,"said Mrs La Varis. "But Tourism Day aims to change all that and start putting the central North Island really on the tourist map."
