Self-help health programme
A second Self Help Health Care course, emphasising womens health, began in Waiouru recently, with 14 women registering for the eight week course. Organiser of the courses. Waiouru public health nurse Anne Whyte, was pleased with the response, and the positive attitudes of the women taking part in the course. At last week's class, topics covered included breast selfexamination, and a discussion of the various means of birth control on the market. The atmosphere of the classes is relaxed and informal, the aim being to allow participants to relate on a personal level so that they can offer support and advice to one another. The course takes eight weeks to complete with classes held once a week. Participants learn how to look after their health, their general physical and mental well-being, and that of their children. They are taught the basics of health care and learn how to improve their existing level of health. A creche is provided by volunteers from the Waiouru playcentre, who also provide afternoon tea for the classes. The course was made possible by a sizable donation from the Waiouru Lions Club and by the supporting playcentre mothers.
