Skiing washout

High winds and bad weather made conditions on both sides of the mountain "pretty grotty" last weekend, according a skifield official. Northwesterlies in excess of 35 knots swept over Turoa and closed the skifield on both days. It also meant the cancellation of the Babbage Cup, an annual fundraising event at Turoa. Whakapapa skifields were open on Sunday, but poor visibility and rain made skiing a "non-event". Considerable snow has been lost from both fields, and officials are hopeful that there may be one or two falls of new snow before the end of the season.
