Karitane nurse
This is a service in our area supported by Plunket for mother support to all mothers of pre-school children. I work 12 hours a week, travelling from mother to mother in their own homes. A lot of families move in to the Waimarino not knowing anyone. Mothers need support in child minding, for feeding problems, for advice with child behaviour and weaning. A Karitane nurse can also give support to a mother who has a child with special needs in a family. A nurse can come in and care for other children while the
mother spends time with that particular child. There are cases also of new mothers coming from hospital with new babies, who have feeding and sleep problems. A Karitane nurse can help with routine advice. I have also found mothers need a break for a few hours now and again from their very young children. lt is rewarding to have a mother come home refreshed and children so happy to see their mothers back home. As a Karitane nurse in our area I am finding the work most enjoyable and rewarding.
