Waimarino squash players enjoy Australian tour

The Waimarino Squash club recently completed an enjoyable 21-day trip to Australia. The group of 30 arrived in Sydney on Saturday 7 June and after visiting Paddy's Market and King's Cross played their first squash. They crossed the city by underground to the Jannali squash centre and played a round-robin of games with local players, matching grades. On Monday evening many of the group dined at a Chinese restaurant and later went to the popular musical Cats, which was excellent in all respects.

On Monday afternoon the group held an enjoyable pool party on the top floor of the hotel, which had a panoramic view of a large part of downtown Sydney. The following day the party travelled by bus to Tamworth where they played squash at the Dean Street squash centre. In the same town the first mock court sitting was held with Colin Hayvice as prosecutorand MartyMcGrath as judge. On Thursday the group headed for sunny Brisbane. The beautiful clean city was enjoyed by everyone, and activites included shopping, races, restaurants and a trip by ferry across the river to Kangaroo Point squash centre for a full day's squash and barbeque and social hour afterwards. On Monday 16 June the group were driven to Gympie where they played squash at the Phoenix squash centre. From Gympie the group went on to Toowoomba and cooler weather. There a second court sitting was held at which Mr Haitana prosecuted Mr Hayvice for serious offences resulting in maximum fines. Squash was also played, at the Willows squash centre. On Friday 20 June the party moved on to Surfers Paradise. On the way they

stopped at an old rum distillery for a shout as it was Darcy Newson's birthday. Then followed six days relaxing on the beach while staying at Aloha apartThe group also visited the Seagulls club where they were entertained by Freddie Fender, and went to the new casino. They also went to Dreamworld, tried out a double roller coaster, and lots of other Disneylandtype fun. The final mock court sitting was held at a barbecue in the garden court of the apartments. This was preceded by a mini-tennis mixed doubles tournament won by numerous coin tosses by Kerry Hayvice and Fishy Haitana. Also a special case was heard against Mr Haitana for espionage and terrorism. The money collected from court fines paid for food and drinks. They also played squash at the Gold Coast squash club and had a very enjoyable night. Finally on Thursday 26 June they flew back to New Zealand. Mention must be made of Noel the bus driver, who was a friendly and humorous escort. Also Darcy Newson's organisation and leadership abilities, and Tige's and Leslie's money and work management were much appreciated.
