Motels for Ohakune

An 18-unit motel has been approved for construction in Goldfinch Street, Ohakune, to be called the Acorn. The two-storeyed units, to cost about $1 million, are to be built on five sections at present used for grazing horses. A number of objections were received at last week's town planning hearing, mainly concerning noise, loss of views and decline in property values. Objectors have a month to appeal the granting of the application. The Ohakune Borough Council went into committee to discuss the proposal. Auckland architect Gary Tonks, who is designing the building, said that efforts had been made to keep the motels low-rise in keeping with the area. Appearance of the units will be quiet and unassuming, with attractive cedar weather-boarding. Extensive landscaping is planned.
