Pony club activities

Although it is winter the Waimarino Pony Club is not entirely in recess. The recent pony club conference in Oamaru was attended by Mesdames Roke, Williams and Cooper and a friendly happy conference it was. The smooth running of the entire conference was a credit to Lyn Trusler, the conference secretary and other members of the North Otago Pony Club who did all the organising. The Instructors demonstrations were as good as ever with that given by Miss Jennifer Stobart on riding position, enhanced by the effective use of an overhead projector, especially stfrnulating. Miss Suzanne Dickens gave a resume of thoughts on the possible contents for the NZPC Manual No 3 to be written for Instructors which covered every imaginable angle. Mrs Janey Fisher ran through the requirements for the c+ certificate which was introduced last season. She emphasised teaching children to listen so they know what is expected from them by the examiner and to be able to explain the reasons for what they are doing. The conference itself was welcomed by Mr Lavender, whose committee had worked for 12 months for this moment, and opened by the Mayor of Oamaru Mr Danny, who gave us a brief history of the town and congratulated the delegates who were "of mature years looking after the interests of young people and their horses". Mr Roland Mathews, NZPC president thanked the North Otago Pony Club, our hosts, and the Mayor and town who recognised the needs of children and their ponies through the recreation and community development schemes. Conference business followed smoothly with all office bearers remaining the same. Good discussions were held on many points and a lot of useful information exchanged. The conference finished early on Sunday and a bus tour was organised to take all those with a few hours to spare on a trip to the Oamaru limestone quarries and on to the Kurikaka Welsh Mountain Pony Stables that are now closed. This establishment was built in 1889 and the stone buildings, which are still in perfect condition, were the envy of many of the party. We thank the present owners, Robin and Joy Nicholls, for their hospitality.
