Services food team trains at Waiouru
Chefs and stewards from the three armed services were working hard at Waiouru's School of Transport and Catering last week preparing for a competition taking place in Australia this week. Army chefs Duane Fyfe, and Malcolm Hepburn. RNZAF chef Lisa Caskey, and stewards Clair Mathe*son from H MNZS Philomel. Matthew Everson. RNZAF. and Steve Northover, Army. are at HMAS Cerberus in Melbourne this week for a defence work skills competition. A group of 40 contestants is representing new Zealand in Melbourne, including other skilled trades such as civilian dockyard workers from Devonport Naval base, and mechanics, carpenters and electricians from the three services.
Warrant Officers Ian MacLennan and Paul Gundersen from the School of Transport and Catering, ATG, Waiouru, will accompany the group. The competition will present the chefs and stewards with a comprehensive test on everyaspect of theirtraining. Included will be the preparation of a full breakfast, cocktails, flambe cooking on a trolley, carving. filleting, table setting, wine serving and flower arrangement. Warrant Officer MacLennan said that there is to be a work skills Olympics in Australia in 1988 which will be attended by 86 countries including New Zealand. Although not yet a member of the Olympic organisation New Zealand was invited to attend this year's competition as an outside institution by the Australia Department of Defence.
