Ski team trains overseas

Members of the Whakapapa Racing Team trained in the northern hemisphere last summer and benefitted greatly from the experience. The first group, eight members of the New Zealand ski development team plus Chris Mosaed of the New Zealand B team travelled to Red Mountain, British Columbia, with coach Rick Reiter of the THC Chateau ski school. Most of the team also raced at Snow Basin, Park City Solitudeand Snowbird in Utah USA. Team members were able to register F.I.S. points for the coming New Zealand series. The second group included five boys from the Whakapapa A and B teams who trained for five intensive weeks at Isola 2000, a ski resort in the Alps Maritime in France. Gilbert Smith, a coach with the THC Chateau ski school in 1985, coached them. Although Isola 2000 is only of average size compared with other French resorts it was still much larger than Whakapapa. The smallest of the three ski areas was about the same size as Whakapapa. Queues were small at Isola and lift tickets surprisingly cheap. Day passes were about $NZ 1 6, and over five weeks a discount pass was only SNZ12 a day.
