Raetihi go down to Waiouru
In a good gairte between teams more evenly matched than indicated by the result, Raetihi were beaten 17-6 by Waiouru on Saturday. Despite a light sprinkling
of snow the Raetihi ground was in good condition, after the game was transferred from Waiouru due to snow. Waiouru went ahead early in the game with a penalty by Errol Brown and a try by V. Haerewa, converted by Brown. But a Kevin Phillips penalty brought the score at halftime to 9-3. In the second half Shane Bray and Peter Major went
over for two more tries to Waiouru, and Raetihi came back with another Kevin Phillips penalty. Waiouru were much bigger in the forwards and Raetihi held them well considering the weight disadvantage. Raetihi loose forwards Chris Bennett and Hemi Rapana in particular played well. Mark Tangaroa and Kevin Phillips also played well.
For Waiouru flanker. Haerewa, No. 8 Dave Fatialofa, lock Mihi and fullback Lee Pompey had good games. Raetihi were not disgraced by the result and were right in the game until the last few minutes. It was really lack of experience by the young side which let in two tries late in the game. Ohakune-Karioi's game against Utiku was postponed due to snow on Saturday. Other first division results were: Kaierau 8, Ratana 3; Marist 19, Wanganui Pirates 12; Wanganui HSOB 40 Marton OB 0.
