Revive the good times at the Junction theatre
Hot Lava, Ohakune's newest nightspot, opens this week on Friday 18 July. Brainchild of Rangataua wood carver Paul Beckett, Hot Lava is in the refurbished shell of what used to be the Ohakune Junction picture theatre. Paul says that Hot Lava
will be a "pub with no beer". Although they will be permitted to sell light lager the no alcohol rule will be strictly enforced. The aim of the nightclub is to provide an entertainment venue for Ohakune which will alsoeventually be a community recreation facility. For this winter there will be regular live bands - The
Mockers, Peking Man, Chills, Tombolas, Everythingthat Flies and Fotofinish - are among those already booked. When the music is no.t live there will be a full disco and light show. The light system consists of four banks of music sequential light, with one of the latest laser lights in the country.
It's not just music however. Other live entertainment may include fire dancers, trapeze artists. dancing troupes and comedians. Interesting food will be available including croissants. tacos, burgers. garlic bread, soups. cakes and vegetarian goodies. Paul says that many other uses of the building are possible including indoor cricket, live theatre and stage shows. "This town needs an entertainment venue and we hope this is the answer," he said.
