Ohakune-Karioi swamp Marton
Ohakune-Karioi swamped Marton OB on Saturday with a display of brilliant rugby. The home team dominated Marton in all departments and could do no wrong. This was a complete team effort for a full 80 minutes, and they looked as if they could have run for another 80. Naming individuals is probably unfair but Andrew Donald played brilliantly, better than before he went away. Steve Gordon also did well in the backs. The forwards played with no let up, won all the lineouts and looked unbeat-
able. Graham Pike had an excellent game as prop and set an example to the rest of the forwards. One disappointment was the low level of local support. This was surprising when the local team is playing such entertaining and successful rugby. For Marton Rex North had a good game and tried hard but he had no hope of getting through against Ohakune-Karioi's might. Scorers: Tries by Kellick Harding, Robbie Manson, Bruce Cranston, Steve Gordon (4), Andrew Donald, Ray Brown, Ricky Harding, Steve Cameron (2), Whetu Mareikura, Lachlan Harding (2), and 4 conversions.
Raetihi beat Marist 9-3 in an evenly matched gamed at Raetihi. Marist scored first with a penalty but Raetihi came back with a try from Gabriel Te Moana, converted by Jeff Fahey, which left the score 6-3 at halftime. In the second half Raetihi went further ahead with a Kevin Phillips penalty goal. Marist started well but were gradually overcome by Raetihi. Marist came back late in the game but could not get through. This was a good game with both teams trying to run the ball. Marist had more forward height but were held by the Raetihi
packand Raetihi capitalised on their opportunities. For Raetihi Kevin Phillips had another steady game at fullback. Kevin Johnson, Bernie McGahon, Chris Bennett and Rangi Bishop also had good games. Mention should be made of Gabriel Te Moana's run over half the field, through most of the Marist team, to score a fine try. Raetihi senior reserves beat their Ohakune-Karioi -opposite numbers 29-10. Raetihi were too good on the day and too fast for Ohakune-Karioi. Other results: Kaierau 7, Marist 6; Wanganui HSOB 19, Ratana 9; Wanganui Pirates 13, Utiku OB 12.
