Basketballers to hold marathon at Ruapehu College this weekend

Ruapehu College basketball teams' 24-hour marathon is on this weekend and all teams are invited to participate. The marathon is being run to raise funds for team uniforms and tracksuits. College team members have been asked to find sponsors and it is hoped they will each raise $50 or more. Organiser of the marathon and coach Bubs Hibbard, invites any teams to participate including rugby, netball and composite teams. Visiting teams will play for an hour each or they can play for serveral hours with hour-long breaks. Teams are required to contribute $10 towards the hire of the Ruapehu College gymnasium, where the marathbn will be held. Teams wishing to take part should contact Bubs Hibbard at Ruapehu College by this Friday so they can be put on the roster. Teams should have five or more players.

The Ruapehu College squad of 14 will be divided into four teams and three girls and two boys will play at one time. Girls will play for half an hour at a time and boys for one hour. Because indoor basketball is a new sport at the college teams have little equipment. They have recently raised money for a ball and are hoping to raise enough from the marathon to buy two sets of uniforms and one set of tracksuits. Team members competing in the marathon are: Tracey Paul, Geraldine Herewini, Valanique Wilson, Janine Stephens, Vicki Pearce, Kelly Dobson, Melissa Brown, Mary Ann Mareikura, Priscilla Hay, Tania and Bubs Hibbard. George Kaiwhare, Greg Taylor, Eugene Wilson, Hoani Hibbard and Murray Macneil are playing with the team to help out. The marathon begins at 2pm this Saturday and finishes 2pm on Sunday.
