Ohakune Pony club AGM
The Ohakune branch of the Waimarino Pony Club enjoyed a good season, despite low membership said the outgoing president, Evelyn Cooper in her report to the club's annual general meeting last week. She said it has been a year to remember with Tania Taylor winning a place in the King Country Area team for the New Zealand Pony Club Championships in Hastings. Thirteen rallies were held throughout the year with an average of eight riders attending. Riding instructors who were available on a regular basis were still hard to get, reported Mrs Cooper.
However she said the help received from Eileen Clarke and Jane Zweibruck after Christmas was very valuable. Mrs Cooper and Jane attended an instructors' course at Kaitieke in March, with national instructor Cheryl Monds. "I cannot stress strongly enough to parents the advantages of taking these courses. The branch is responsible for funding instructors providing they in turn instruct at rallies," she said. Last November, instructors and parents from all five branches in the King Country took part in a C+ level seminar at Owhango. Tania Taylor was the first member of the club to gain the C+ certificate. In December, Cheryl Monds conducted a fourday riding course at Raetihi and in late January a camp was held at Winstone Afforestation in Raetihi. Although few members attended they enjoyed good weather, a new riding area and swimming in a dam, she said. Mrs Cooper said it was a pity that more use could not be made of the summer school holidays but she had to work during that time, and there was no-one else able or willing to help with activities then. The Ohakune branch organised two events during the year, a one day event at the Roke property in Lakes Road in December and an adult gymkhana at Rangataua in April. The branch also hosted the Waimarino one day event in March and the Waimarino Gymkhana in April, and helped at the King Country Area Trials in January. Members visited the Raetihi Pony Club who were hosting the Waimarino games day and the King Country games day in November and the dressage day in February. Mrs Cooper noted with regret, the passing of the branch's patron, Mr Rumens, known by the club as "Poppa". "He was loved by us all and is missed for his out-
standing mterest in all aspects of our pony club and his dry sense of humour," said Mrs Cooper. At the meeting, John Bolstad was elected president and Eileen Clarke secretary. Jane Zweibruck is the head instructor and Evelyn Cooper publicity officer. Delegates to attend the Waimarino and King Country meetings are Lorraine Taylor, John Bolstad and Evelyn Cooper. Subs for the branch are to remain the same as last year, at $10 for individuals and $25 for families. It was decided to hold the subs at that rate as the branch was financially sound. Prize winners for the year were: Attendance - Michelle Eades; grooming and gear, 14 years and over, Michelle Eades, 13 years and under, Robert Taylor; most improved rider, senior, Michelle Eades, junior, Nicola Gibson and Robert Taylor; most promising rider, Tania Taylor; horsemanship, senior, Tania Taylor, junior, Fiona Evans and Serena Taylor; Singapore rosette nomination, Michelle Eades; certificate for sportsmanship and courtesy, Glen Wilson; D certificates, Nicola Gibson and Robert Taylor, C+ certificate, Tania Taylor.
