Adult reading tutors needed
The Adult Reading and Learning Association (A.R.L.A.) is being reformed in the King Country area. A.R.L.A. are a worldwide volunteer group of men and women whose aim is to help adults who have reading or learning difficulties. The individual student determines how far they would like to go. For some learning to write their name or to fill in common forms is enough. Others start out with that knowledge but want to sit trade or other exams. Our aim is to assist the person concerned to meet their goals be it the basics of reading and writing, improving spelling and writing for work purposes, learning to read technical material, or reading for pleasure. The co-ordinator of each group assesses the capabilities of new students, their
requirements and goals and then matches them to a suitable tutor. More tutors are needed in the King Country area. A training course for tutors will take place in Taumarunui starting on Friday night, 27 June through to Sunday afternoon 29 June. This is a first for the area as courses are usually held in Wanganui or Hamilton. The course is designed to give prospective tutors an insight into what will be expected of them and ideas for helping students. The course will be run by Jean James who is a national co-ordinator from Masterton and Sandra Fox from Wanganui Community College. Both these people are very experienced in this field. They will be assisted by Gaye Anstis, a Taumarunui co-ordinator, who has been with A. R. L. A. for eight years. Would you like to be a tutor and know more? Please ring Gaye Anstis, phone 8142 Taumarunui; Maureen Murphy, phone 3291 Taumarunui A/H; Rita Wise, phone 58-223 Ohakune; R.E.A.P. 8680 Taumarunui; or R.E.A.P. 80-109 Taihape.
