Prison officers' medals
Dear Sir, 1 wish to point out that an article published in the Waimarino Bulletin on Tuesday 1 3 May is incorrect. You state that Mr Kelvin Nolly, First Officer, was the first officer to receive a long service medal at Waikune Prison. In early 1970 three officers were presented with long service medals. These were officer J. Trodd, K. Thackeray and P. Heslin. As these medals did not have the Queen's approval they were declared invalid. In 1981 however the Queen gave her approval for prison officers to be entitled to receive a medal for good conduct and long service. In 1982 at the Waikune
officers' club there were four long service medals presented by the Secretary for Justice. They were presented to the following officers: Mr K.A. Zweibruck (now retired), Mr J. Shadbolt (now retired), MrT. Metcalf(now retired), and Mr K. Hounslow (now superintendent of Waikune Prison). My husband worked at Waikune for 19 years 10 months making him the longest serving officer there. I am sure of these facts. Yours faithfully,
Colleen
Zweibruck
The Bulletin regrets that misinterpretation led to publication of incorrect information. Editor.
