Endurance rides at Karioi
The Karioi Endurance Riding Club event held at Peter McDonnell's farm at Karioi on Saturday attracted riders from many parts of the central North Island. There were two events: a 40 km open endurance ride and a 20 km training ride. In the first, riders had 4'/4 hours to finish. In the latter, riders had to finish in more than V/i hours and less than 2 ViThe aim of endurance riding is not to race but to qualify within the rules of the event. In particular horsemanship and the fitness of the horse is important. Horses are checked by vets before and after rides. To qualify the horses' heartbeat must return to 60 half an hour after finishing. This is the second year in which the Karioi club has run the event. The club started with a local group of farmers and has now grown to a popular regional event. Endurance riding is a fast growing New Zealand sport and courses are often 100km or more. First senior: M. Brown, Ohakune, 2:24:43. 40km open ride: 1 K. Rowe, 3:17:07; 2 M. McLellan, Stratford, 3:19:16; 3 J. Bullions, 3:19:32; 4 K. Wyatt, 3:25:30; 5 J. Dixon, 4:22:54. Junior horsemanship local rider: M. Fredericksen. Horsemanship trophy and fittest horse: K. Wyatt.
