Golf tournament draws strong field
Winner of the Waimarino Golf Club's annual 72-hole match-play tournament held over the weekend was ex-Waima-rino player, John Gatley. Mr Gatley, who now plays for Lochiel in Hamilton, has won the tournament three times before, in 1975, 1978 and 1979. He shifted from the Waimarino about 10 years ago and has played representative and Freyberg golf for Lochiel. Runner-up in the tournament was an up and coming youngster, Brendon Follows, from the Belmont Golf Club in Wanganui. He has been a New Zealand junior representative and is one of the most promising young golfers in the ManawatuWanganui area. All of the 22 prize-winners received electrical appliances presented by John Bell from Dominion Breweries, Wanganui. There was a field of 60 players for the weekend, about half local and the rest from Central North Island areas including Taihape, Cambridge, Foxton, Palmerston North, Taumarunui and Hamilton.
Organiser of the tournament, John Summerhays, said the weekend was a success and it will be run along the same lines next yeat.
