How far to Raetihi? Left at Waiouru, you can't miss it

When you are lost ask a policeman, or woman, they say, but a Wellington policewoman called Leonie got a shock this week when her sense of direction let her down. The unfortunate consta-

ble, who was staying in Rangataua Road with friends, is in training for the Fletcher marathon to be held in the first week of May. She planned to do a 30km training run last week and

asked her hosts to suggest a good circuit. The night before, they drove her round the triangle from Reynolds corner in Ohakune out to Raetihi and back via Tohunga Road. "Yes IVe got it," she said confidently. And the next day, at 9.30am she set off. She ran and ran, and ran some more, all the time expecting to reach Raetihi. But no luck. Finally while ploughing up a biggish hill she stopped a cyclist to ask: "How far is it to Raetihi?" The cyclist gave her a dubious look. "Raetihi? You're nearly at Waiouru!" When she picked herself up from the road she ran on to Waiouru, rang her surprised hosts and said: "Please collect me from Waiouru. . . " Which all goes to show that a Wellington policewoman in the Waimarino may not be the best person from whom to get directions!
