Farmers' leader stands down

After eight years as president of the Waimarino Branch of Federated Farmers, Doug Bennett is standing down. The branch's annual general meeting recentlydecided that David Griffiths of Pokaka was the new president, while George Drayton was re-elected secretary/treasurer. Federated Farmers' provincial president, David Hine from Wanganui, spoke to the meeting about issues affecting Federated Farmers. A rural citizens march is to be held in Wellington on 30 April. Buses will probably be provided from Wanganui to transport farmers wishing to take part. Farmers will be protesting about the effects on farming of government policy, the high cost of living, inflation and high interest rates.
