KARATE

Charles Mareikura, selected for the New Zealand Martial Arts council team at Labour Weekend last year, went to Auckland last week to fight against an all-Auckland invitation side. The team was supposed to fight the Australian team this year but the event did not take place because suitable dates could not be arranged. The New Zealand team beat Auckland 24 fights to 1 0, Charles winning one and losing one. Members of the New Zealand team were predominantly from Wellington, but also from Christchurch and Invercargill. The Wellington regional karate championships will be held at Wellington at Queen's Birthday weekend and Charles' Whanake Rangataua Karate group will be taking part.
