Cancer Society coffee morning
The executive officer of the Cancer Society of New Zealand will be available to answer questions at a fund-raising coffee morning for the Waimarino Cancer Support Group on Thursday. Mr Robin Brassington will be coming from Palmerston North for the morning, and he will also speak to Ruapehu College pupils the following day. A bring and buy will also be held at the coffee morning, which will be held at Jim and Norma Cranston's home on Raetihi Road. The Waimarino Cancer Support Group gives support to the relatives and friends of those with cancer. They help in many ways including child minding, mowing lawns and sitting with patients to give the relatives or friends a break. Co-ordinator of the group, Wyn McCarthy, said the aim is not to nurse patients, but more to support those close to patients. There are 25 members in the Waimaino support group and money is needed to reimburse them for their travel costs. Patients are often taken to a specialist or doctor by group members, with no charge to the patient. The group meets about four times a year and there is an annual fee of $5. Wyn McCarthy said that Thursday's coffee morning was only the second time the group had tried to raise funds. The fee for the coffee morning is $1 and any items for the bring and buy will be greatly appreciated.
