Earthquake shakes Mt Ruapehu

A relatively large localised earthquake was recorded at the summit of Mt Ruapehu last week. The 'quake measured 3.5 on the Richter scale but was not felt at the base of the mountain. ~ A spokesman at headquarters of Tongariro National Park said it was the first major localised 'quake since 1984. Earthquakes which are recorded on the seismograph in the park are usually centred elsewhere, he said. The spokesman said it was pleasing to see the early warning system picked the earthquake up and did everything it was supposed to do.
