Ohakune 1986-87 charges up

Most Ohakune Borough sundry charges will rise next financial year, at least partly because of G.S.T. which applies from 1 Octoher. Borough councillors met last week to discuss the rises recommended by town clerk, Mrs Edith Moore, which they needed to settle before she prepared estimates of expenditure for the year. The estimates must be finalised by the May council meeting so that rates can be

approved in June in time for rate assessments to be sent out, which must be in June. Mrs Moore said that the reason for estimates going higher in some areas will also be due to salary increases for council officers, some of which were over 30 per cent, and because of the recent introduction of a 35 hour week for local body staff. The council also considered its roading programme for 1986-87, and a

forecast for three years, 1986-89. This included assessing the amount to be contributed by the ratepayer and the National Roads' Board as in the past the N.R.B. has contributed 60 per cent of the total. However, Mrs Moore said that there was no guarantee that the N.R.B. would continue to make such percentage contributions. Examples of increased

charges include building permit fees up 20 per cent, plumbing and drainage permit fees up around five per cent, and sundry licence fees, such as for food factories, eating houses, hairdressers, ski lodges and public buildings, up 20 per cent. Charges for town planning data, sale of refuse bags, sewer connections, cemetery intermciits, motor camp occupancy are also up. Most water charges will be increased, including Ruapehu College, up $100 to $350 and Ohakune School up $96 to $326, but borough swimming pools and spa pools- will no longer be charged for. Pensioner housing rents will rise from $7.50 to $10 per week for single units, and from $10 to $20. Most library charges are dropped, although the out-of-district bond is up to $30 from $25.
